This guide provides information and valuable resources for students when preparing to submit federal and West Virginia income taxes.

Most U.S. citizens or permanent residents who work in the U.S. have to file a tax return.

Generally, you need to file if:

Even if you make less than the income required to file, consider filing anyway. You may get money back:

  • If you qualify for a refundable tax credit
  • If your paycheck had federal income tax withheld
  • If you made estimated tax payments

Forms

Required Documents

People or organizations that paid you during the year are required to report the payments to the IRS on an information return. They must file these forms with the IRS and send a copy to you. You should get them electronically or by mail in January or February. This is called a W-2 form.
